Screaming at Bassoonists: A ‘National’ Pastime

On a Saturday evening in late February 2008, a Brooklyn-based rock quintet called The National performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s beautiful Howard Gilman Opera House. The show, in a word, was spectacular. Sporting anywhere from five to fifteen musicians on stage at a time, The National displayed their brand of mellow, brooding chamber rock in a way that felt anything but mellow or brooding. Electric, intense, and huge are just a few of the adjectives that feel more appropriate.

No Wings with these Hooters - Just Good ol’ Rock and Roll

My friend asked me if I wanted to see Hooters at BB King’s Blues Club and Grill in Times Square the other night–of course, I immediately jumped at the opportunity. Upon arriving at BB King’s, I saw 5 guys on stage and not a hooter in site. After taking my seat and ordering a beer, I remembered these guys from back in the 80’s. The Hooters… I remembered seeing their videos back when MTV played videos. “And We Danced”, “All you Zombies”, “Day by Day”…all great stuff.
